Critter Tales
FIREWORKS: Please use extra caution using fireworks around your pets. Many pets are afraid of the noise and will take off. We always get in a lot of strays around the 4th of July. So please keep you pets inside or away from the festivities. We also tend to see more dog bites during this time. It probably is due to all the commotion and their nervousness. So keep everyone safe by keeping fireworks away from your pets. DANGEROUS ROADWAYS: Most of you know that an ATV driver from our county was killed when he hit a dog that was on the road. The dog survived. Animals need to be kept off the road because: 1) Unless you are walking your pet on a leash, your pet is at-large on the road & you are legally liable for any damage it causes while at-large. 2) It is in danger of being hit & killed or injured by motor vehicles. 3) It can cause a serious or fatal accident for a motorist. 4) Dogs have a tendency to chase after kids, those on bikes especially. Scared kids often get injured or bit trying to get away from a dog that is chasing them. So please keep everyone safe from harm by keeping your pets restrained to your property only and off of the roads. CATS: We have some very nice cats at the shelter. If you are in need of a companion and don’t want the hassle of owning a dog, STRAY PETS: Every stray animal at our shelter could be back at home with their owner if only they had ID’s on their collars. By law, every dog should be wearing its rabies and county license tags. Personalized tags can also be pur-chased at our shelter for only $5. You can put as much or as little info on both sides of the tag. Any ID tag will help us get your pet back to you. WLDY-WJBL also provides free lost and found info. You just need to call them (532-5588) with information about your lost (or found) pet and they will put in on the radio for free. Please help us to help you get your pet safely back home. Don’t assume your pet got killed or is out roaming. Chances are we have it at our shelter. All it takes is a phone call to see if we have it (532-2637). HOT DOGS: For those of you who like to travel with your pets, please DO NOT take your pet with you when you go shopping and have to leave it in alone in your vehicle. It only takes a few minutes of being locked in a hot car to cause its death. Even if you leave your windows open a crack, it is still too hot for them. If you love your pet, leave them at home during hot weather days.
